Urgency As Evidence…

A couple of weeks ago I participated in the Garrison-Martineau Project on the campus of the University of California at Irvine. The project is billed as “a simple idea: 2 believers, 2 nonbelievers and a trained facilitator getting together for a few hours, sharing food and conversation. The first hour is dedicated to allowing each person to tell the story of their own personal theological journey… The second hour is dedicated to allowing each person to choose a current issue regarding the role of religion in public life (either not enough or too much...) and explain why that issue is of concern to them… The last hour is dedicated to -- food!”

The project promoters say that they “do not expect people to leave with sympathy for the political proposals of the ‘other side’, but (they) do firmly believe that developing empathy for the human fear, anger and hope behind the proposals is the first step to developing creative solutions in the future which can address all of our human concerns.” They also cite two commitments: (1) “promoting dialogue and understanding between believers and nonbelievers” and (2) “helping people to be heard, lowering the anger and anxiety of the ‘culture war’ as a means of improving civic discourse”.

From a Podcast Listener in California:

"Thank you so much for your ministry. I down loaded one podcast and then had to get them all because of how good they are.

Moreover, your style of approach to the difficult subject matter is what a normal conversation needs, not technical jargon."
