'I’m not sure I even believe that Jesus was truly here on planet earth. What if he is just an elaborate mythology?'

Well, I do think that all of us need to know the truth about all the mythologies that came before Jesus, and examine the historical evidence related to Jesus Himself. There are solid historical reasons to believe that Jesus was actually a real person, and the idea that He was simply a re-creation or re-formulation of prior deity mythologies simply does not hold up to scrutiny. That’s why we assembled this web page!

'Even if Jesus did live as part of history, why should we believe anything that is written in the Bible about him?'

This is a good point and something that we honestly tried to answer on our “Power of the Book” page. Let’s face it; if you can’t trust the Bible, there is no reason to believe anything that is printed on its pages. After you examine that web page about the scriptures, we think you will see that there is, at least, a strong case for the reliability of the Bible. Once that has been decided, it’s time to turn our sights on the person of Jesus Christ

'I heard that Jesus never even claimed to be God, and that this was later a creation of the early Catholic Church. How do we know that Jesus ever said He was divine?'

This has certainly become a popular line of thought, particularly following the DaVinci Code. But if you will examine the earliest manuscripts of the Bible, and couple these with the teachings of the earliest church fathers, you will find that the idea that Jesus is God is something that Jesus claimed, the Bible proclaimed and the first church fathers exclaimed. It is a consistent belief of Christians from the earliest of times; years and years before the rise of the Catholic Church or any Council was ever convened.

'OK, but even if He did say He was God, that really proves nothing. Why should I believe that Jesus IS God?'

Now we are getting to the heart of the matter. First you would have to trust that the Bible has been transmitted reliably and is an accurate eyewitness account. Then you would want to examine the life of Jesus carefully and take a hard look at how he lived, what he taught and the power that he possessed. Finally, I think you would want to examine the lives of the eyewitnesses to see if history could tell you something about their reliability. With all this in mind, you should at least be able to come to some kind of understanding about Jesus and a decision about whether or not He is the God who is worthy of your worship and life.
