Examples of Apologetics Missions and Group Activities

A New Kind of Philosophical Missions Trip (to Berkeley)
With so many young people leaving the faith in their high school and college years, it's time for a new kind of missions trip. We designed the Berkeley Experience with Brett Kunkle from Stand to Reason. This video records the first time a trip of this nature was ever conducted. The goal of the trip was to put young people in a place where they could interact with people who hold a secular or non-Christian worldview and (1) learn what those worldviews have to offer while (2) reasoning through the cohesive details of the Christian Worldview. We began by taking to the campus of UC Berkeley and talking to individual students and student groups about their beliefs related to spiritual matters. We then invited local atheists to come and present their views to our students, allowing for a Q and A period following each talk. We also visited other groups and we visited with apologists for the Christian faith. The culmination of the trip was a presentation exercise in which the students were required to present their defense for a particular aspect of the Christian worldview in a group setting. This type of demanding and challenging trip encourages young people to examine what they believe and test these beliefs with those who hold differing views. The result is a group of young Christians who are far more confident of their Christian Worldview and far better prepared to defend it in the college setting.

A New Kind of Theological Missions Trip (to Utah)
With so many young Christians unable to articulate what they believe about God and unfamiliar with Christian orthodoxy, it's time for a new kind of missions trip. The Utah Mission seeks to remedy the dilemma of theological illiteracy. This video is edited from several trips to the state of Utah. Each trip was similarly designed to place young Christians in a setting where they needed to articulate Christian Orthodoxy to those who have accepted a distortion of classic Christianity. While Mormons utilize the same terms to describe their faith, they have redefined these terms until they no longer have any similarity with Orthodox Christianity. We began with extensive theological training and then shared the truth of Christianity with students on the campuses of BYU and Utah State University, door to door in the city of Provo, on the streets of Salt Lake City, and at the Manti Miracle Pageant. Along the way we exposed the group to the best Christian and Mormon apologists in the field, including Bill McKeever, Sandra Tanner, Rob Sivulka, Mike Norton, Jay Howard and John Tvedtnes. This type of demanding and challenging trip encourages young people to examine what they believe and test these beliefs with those who hold differing views. The result is a group of young Christians who are far more confident of their Christian Worldview and far better prepared to defend it to those who hold a differing view.

A New Kind of Fellowship Activity (Sharing and Service)
With so many youth groups inwardly focused on fellowship activities that hope to excite and entice young people through some recreational activity, it's time for a new kind of fellowship activity. Service trips and activities that provide young people with an opportunity to reach out beyond their own desires and the temptations of the culture are an excellent vehicle through which young people can come to understand their purpose and find fellowship with other like-minded students. While recreational trips provide an opportunity for young people to get to know each other ( and maybe even hear a good speaker), service and sharing trips unite young people in "fox-hole fellowship" and give students an opportunity to live the Gospel message directly. This video is simply one example of an Easter week set of activities designed for young people. Instead of attending a recreational camp, this group participated in a service project locally, served at a soup kitchen and then travelled to a local orphanage to serve children in need. Notice the degree to which these students are enjoying themselves as they express their faith in word and deed.
